Bilateral audio stimulation, BAS, is a single tone that moves from your left ear to your right ear and back, in a slow, continuous loop.
No two frequencies. No gap. No brainwave claim attached to it. Just one sound, moving.
That makes it a genuinely different tool to a binaural beat, and it's worth being clear about that difference before making any claim about whether it works.
What Is Bilateral Audio Stimulation?
A binaural beat relies on two separate tones, one in each ear, close in frequency. Your brainstem processes the difference between them, and that difference is what the entrainment claim is built on.
BAS doesn't do that. It's one tone, panned from ear to ear at a set rate. There's no gap frequency, no Theta or Delta claim, because there's no beat being generated for the brain to entrain to.
What's happening instead is simpler. Your auditory system tracks the sound as it moves. That's it. A moving sound source is easy for the brain to follow, and following it doesn't take conscious effort.
This distinction matters for what you can honestly expect from a session.

Bilateral audio stimulation doesn't make an entrainment claim. It's a tracking response, the brain following an external, predictable, moving stimulus. This is a different, well-established category of attention, not a brainwave-state claim.

Here's where we stay honest rather than reach for a bigger claim than we can back.
Left-right alternating stimulation is a recognised component of structured therapeutic protocols, where it's paired with guided processing work and delivered by a trained practitioner. That combination, stimulus plus guided process plus practitioner, has research behind it as a full protocol.
What's thinner is research on the audio-only stimulus in isolation, outside that full protocol, the way it's used here. That's a smaller, newer body of evidence than the binaural beat research we cite elsewhere on this site. We're not going to dress that up as more settled than it is.
What we can say plainly: the stimulus itself, alternating and predictable, is the same one used in those structured settings. What we're offering is that stimulus on its own, as a functional audio tool, not a therapy session and not a replacement for one.
People who find binaural beats too subtle sometimes respond better to BAS, the movement is more tangible, easier to actually notice and follow. It also doesn't require the same headphone precision as a binaural beat's frequency gap, though headphones are still required for the left-right movement to register properly.
It tends to suit:
Moments of acute anxiety or racing thoughts, where an external anchor helps more than trying to calm down internally
Evening wind-down, where a slow, predictable sweep gives the mind somewhere to rest attention
Anyone who wants a functional audio tool without the added complexity of tracking a frequency gap
Headphones required, the same as binaural beats. Without stereo separation, there's no left-right movement to track.
Find somewhere quiet. Let the sound move without trying to do anything with it. Give it at least fifteen to twenty minutes, the tracking response settles in gradually, not instantly.
Bilateral audio stimulation is not binaural beats with a different name, and it's not a repackaged therapy session. It's a distinct mechanism, external tracking rather than internal entrainment, offered as exactly what it is.
