Most people trying binaural beats for sleep are making the same mistake. They find a session, press play, and wonder why it isn't working.
The problem usually isn't the binaural gap. It isn't the headphones.
It isn't even the ambient music layered over the top, although that is a separate problem entirely.
The problem is the carrier frequency.
What Is a Carrier Frequency?
When you listen to a binaural beat session, two tones are delivered separately, one to each ear. Your brain calculates the difference between them and perceives a third tone, a phantom pulse that doesn't exist in the audio. That phantom pulse is the binaural beat.
The two tones doing the delivering are called carrier frequencies.
They are not the beat. They carry it.
Most producers treat carrier frequencies as an afterthought. They pick a number that sounds reasonable, usually somewhere between 200 and 400Hz, and move on. What the research suggests is that this choice matters more than almost any other variable in the session.
What Mirmohamadi 2024 Actually Found
A 2024 peer reviewed study published in Basic and Clinical Neuroscience examined the effect of carrier frequency on binaural beat entrainment strength. The researchers measured EEG responses across sessions using different carrier frequencies targeting the same binaural gap.
The finding was significant. Lower carrier frequencies produced stronger and more consistent EEG responses than higher ones. The brain followed the beat more reliably, more measurably, and more consistently when the carriers were lower.
This is not a subtle difference. It is a variable that changes whether the session works or not.

The Problem With High Carriers for Sleep
Here is the issue.
If you are trying to guide someone toward Delta, the brainwave range associated with deep dreamless sleep and physical restoration, a carrier frequency of 300Hz is working against you.
300Hz is bright. Present. Alert.
It sits in a register the auditory system associates with clarity and attention. Asking someone to fall asleep on a signal delivered at that frequency is like trying to wind down under fluorescent lighting.
The physics of the sound and the intended outcome of the session are pulling in opposite directions.
Soporific Tones
At Chromasound we use the term soporific tones to describe carrier frequencies deliberately chosen for their sleep-inducing physical quality. Soporific means sleep-inducing. It is a clinical word and we use it intentionally.
A soporific tone sits below 100Hz. In that register the sound becomes heavy, slow and physical. You feel it as much as you hear it. The auditory system stops associating the signal with alertness and begins responding to it as something closer to stillness.
This is not metaphor. It is physics. Lower frequencies vibrate more slowly. The auditory brainstem responds to that slower vibration differently than it responds to a bright mid-range tone. When you combine a sub-100Hz carrier with a Delta range binaural gap, you are aligning every variable in the session toward the same outcome.
Deep rest. Physical stillness. Sleep.

Why This Matters for You
If you have tried binaural beats for sleep and felt nothing, there is a reasonable chance the carrier frequency was working against you. A session with a Delta gap delivered on 300Hz carriers is technically a binaural beat session. It is not a soporific one.
The gap tells the brain what state to move toward.
The carrier determines how easy it is to get there.
For sleep, you want both pulling in the same direction. A slow gap and a slow carrier. Delta and sub-100Hz. The brain follows the frequency. Give it something worth following.
How To Listen
Stereo headphones only. Speakers collapse the binaural effect entirely. Set the volume low, just loud enough to hear the tones clearly.
The effect is neural not auditory, louder does not mean more effective.
Lie down. Give the session a minimum of twenty minutes. Thirty is better. The brain does not entrain instantly.
It follows gradually, which is exactly what you want when the destination is sleep.
If the tones feel unusual at first, stay with it. Pure tones without ambient masking sound different to what most people expect.
That difference is the point. If you can hear the tones clearly, the signal is reaching your brain.
That is all it needs to do.
